Jardim Botanico – Rio de Janeiro – Panos and 3D scans

During the last month of 2015 I woke up early one Monday morning to visit Jardim Botanico in Rio before open hours to the public.  My brother in law let me in before any other visitors were there so I could shoot panos and photogrammetry scans with no people walking around the area.  During the 3 hours I was able to capture 4 decent locations, two of which I will try to post here.  This sketchfab embed below allows you to tumble around with the tree.  If you click the sketchfab logo, it will take you to the website where I have many more models, and they can be viewed in stereo VR with google cardboard or other HMD.

This is a huge tree near the center fountain at Jardim Botanico in Rio de Janeiro. The photo of myself is in there for scale, this is a very large tree, about 7 meters across at the bottom. It was photoscanned with a Sony Alpha7, 24mm zeiss lens, and tripod shooting 72 photos in the morning on a cloudy day. These photos were processed with Reality Capture software and assembled in Maya. Also two HDR 360 panos were shot on each side of the tree to provide a fake environment or potential lighting source if used in 3D.

I shot panos on both sides of the tree for full coverage in 3D.

This is a freestanding big stone entrance for an old Art Acadamy which was demolished in 1938. The geo is photoscanned with a Sony a7, front is 26 images, back is 48, processed with Reality Capture. Then I shot two segmented HDR panoramic photos with a Nikon D40 and nodal ninja, 7 exposures, total 90 photos each. These HDR panos can be used later for 3D lighting in Maya, but here on sketchfab there is not shading happening.

This is the back of the very same Portal, but very dark because of surrounding trees and bamboo.

Now this last thing is a test.  On this website called youvisit dot com you can post a bunch of 360 panos and link them in a tour, just trying it out now, all 7 panos for the day.  Seems to work well for me with Chrome browser, check it out.
